Granger High of West Valley, Utah returns to defend 3-on-3 championship in 2010 Teacher Games
Granger High School of West Valley, Utah will return to defend its title in the 3-on-3 basketball competition of the third annual Teacher Games in Mesquite Nov. 12-14.
The Lancers won the competition last year and captured first-place money of $2,000 during play at Virgin Valley High School.
“We got thrown around like little rag dolls last year, so we’re prepared for the best,” said Charlie Peterson, 33, and a former BYU quarterback who coaches football and teaches physical education. “The competition was outstanding, so we’re expecting an even bigger challenge this year.”
Peterson will be joined this year by Dustin Stip, a tracker at Granger High; and Doyle Holt, who is the Lancers’ head football coach.”
Holt played in the 3-on-3 competition last year heading up the school’s second entry.
In addition, Granger is expected to enter teams in Texas Hold Em Poker, softball and bowling. During the 2009 Teacher Games, Granger won the Texas Hold ‘Em, finished second in softball before winning the 3-on-3 competition over Las Vegas’ Canyon Ridge High School which was headed by former UNLV great Freddie Banks.
Granger won a total of $5,000 last year tying with Snyder Elementary of Las Vegas for top money.
Peterson funded all of the school’s athletic uniforms with the money won last year. The school also gave $500 to each of the extra curricular activities with the money won in Mesquite.
“The money is huge for this school,” said Peterson. “We’re not one of those rich schools, so we really need the money.”
Teachers and administrators from several states are expected to converge on Mesquite for the 2010 Teacher Games. The event offers more than $20,000 in winnings which are donated back to the schools by team representatives.
Other events scheduled for this year’s Teacher Games include Bunco; golf; Texas Hold ‘em Poker; bowling; 5K run; softball and billiards.
